日本のベンチャー企業では一般に、創業者が必ず社長となり、様々な局面で個人保証に応じることで家族の人生までも会社の成否に賭けることになります。そして流動性が低いために、チームのメンバーは、創業者とたまたま関わり合いのある人に限定されます。ちょうど図２のような状況です。創業者は、たとえばどんなに優れた技術者であっても、経営者として必ずしも色が濃いとは限りません。また創業者とたまたま関わり合いのある人たちも色の濃い人とは限りません。つまり数少ない色の濃い人が様々なベンチャー企業に分散する構造になっています。日本のベンチャーキャピタルでは総じて、少額を数多くのベンチャー企業に投資してリスク分散を図る傾向が顕著であることも、この構造を支えています。良くも悪くも、日本のベンチャー企業のレベルは均一なのです。
一方シリコンバレーでは、創業者が必ず社長になるとは限りません。創業者も適材適所で得意分野を担当する、チームメンバーのひとりという考え方が普通です。「これ！」という創業間もない会社には、ベンチャーキャピタルが経営者として一流の実績のある人を連れてきて社長とする場合が多い。Googleも、そして私が以前勤めていた会社もスタンフォード大学の学生/教員が創業者ですが、創業まもなく（おそらく億円単位の報酬を得ていたであろう）大企業で実績のあるトップマネジメントをスカウトして社長に据えて、ここからチーム作りがスタートしました。このようなことは日本では起こりません。あくまで、手を挙げた人が社長です。
