ストレンジャーテストとは、買おうか迷っているときに「見知らぬ人からその金額でその商品を譲って欲しいと言われたらどうするか？」を自分に問いかけるというテストです。たとえば、10万円の液晶テレビの購入を迷っているとして、その商品を「10万円で譲って」といわれたら、現金10万円のほうが自分にとって魅力的か？それともやはり液晶テレビか？を考え、前者であれば購入を見合わせると判断するといった具合です。
このテストの利点は、買うべきかどうかを判断する機会を冷静に自分に与えられること。自分の理性と対話し、やはり欲しいものなら買えばいいし、そうでないなら再考したほうがよいと判断すればよいのです。PCや家電・自動車といった高額な買い物のとき、特に使えそうですね。
