『シルクロードの死神』
ある日本人青年がシルクロードを一人で旅をしていた時のこ
と、こんな体験をした。
ローカルバスに乗って南新彊をめざしていたところ、突
然昼間なのにピカッと光るものを感じた。その後、バスの
中を見渡すと同乗者たちが皆、鼻血を流している。その光
景は滑稽にさえ思えた。そころが、鼻に手を当てると自分
も同じように血が出ているのに気がついた。バスの中は騒
然となった。あの時、私は被爆したのかも知れない。
新彊ウイグル自治区の南部に広がるタクラマカン砂漠には、
中国の核実験基地がある。その風下に位置する西側の村々では、
直接、放射性物質が降り注ぐ。
大脳未発達の赤ちゃんが数多く生まれ、奇病が流行し、ガン
の発生率は中国の他の地域に比べて極めて高い。その９割が血
液のガン、白血病である。中国政府の圧力のために、こうした
事実は公にされず、貧しい患者たちは薬も買えずに死を待つ。
こうした状況を報道したドキュメンタリー “Death on the
Silk Road” 『シルクロードの死神』が1998年７、８月、イギ
リスのテレビ局で放映され、衝撃を与えた。この番組は、その
後、フランス、ドイツ、オランダなど欧州諸国をはじめ、世界
８３カ国で放送され、翌年、優れた報道映像作品に送られるロ
ーリー・ペック賞を受賞した。
弊誌で調べた範囲では、この８３もの国々の中に、なぜか我
が国は含まれていないようだ。
