カナダの女性と話していて、羨ましさのあまり何度も溜息が出た。それは彼女の経歴による。大学を出た後、彼女は若いうちはいろいろな国を旅し、様々な経験をしたいと思い、日本や韓国で暮らしながら英会話の先生をしていたのだという。そうして３０歳を過ぎて帰国。日本であれば、２０代のほとんどを海外で過ごし、突然帰国したところで受け入れてくれる職場はあまりにも少ない。が、カナダではそういった経歴は就職するにあたってまっ・・・たく関係ないということだった。日本と韓国で暮らした経験のある彼女は、いかにこのふたつの国が新卒至上主義的な価値観に縛られているか、いかに「特殊」な状況であるかを語ってくれたのだった。ヨーロッパの人なんかと話しても、３０歳くらいまでいろんな経験をしてそれから就職を考える、なんて話を結構聞く。翻って日本とは言えば、多くの若者が新卒でどこかの会社に潜り込まないと大変なことになる、と脅迫されているような状況だ。そうして若いうちだからこそ経験できる様々なことをすべて犠牲にしろと迫られているのは、非常に不幸なことだと思うのだ。
